By Sports Illustrated Staff Writer | Sun, 08/04/2018 10:55:51 John Paul III’s final game at the Cardinals Stadium in St. Louis was a moment of magic and tragedy, a game of the past and the future of the Cardinals.
But it was also the first time in Cardinals history that the Cardinals’ first two home games were played at a new stadium.
The St. Joe’s football team had previously played at an old St. Paul Stadium, where it had been the home of the St. Mary’s University football team for most of its history.
The new St. James Athletic Park opened this year and will provide a new home for the Cardinals and their other professional sports teams, including the Sts.
John Fisher College football team, which has played at the facility since 1992.
The Cardinals, whose record is 7-3-1 since joining the Major League Soccer (MLS), are also the only MLB team to have played at St. Anthony, N.Y., home of St. Francis Xavier University.
The team’s last home game, at the St Anthony Civic Center in 2015, was played in the Cardinals uniform, but the Stiles and the Cardinals did not play on the same field.
St. Johns football coach Chris Haney said the new stadium is a win for St. Joes fans.
“I think that’s what the fans want to see more of,” he said.
The teams play every weekend, and the two teams will play each other in a Sept. 1, 2019, regular-season opener.
“We’re going to have to wait and see how the stadium is,” St. Ignatius head coach Matt Gurney said.
“This is a historic stadium, but it’s also a new facility.
The building is beautiful, it’s beautiful and it’s ready for a great football team.”
Gurnee said the stadium will have a great atmosphere and a good fan experience, with a good crowd.
The first game at St James Athletic, which opened in 1997, was the Cardinals-St. John Fischer College baseball team’s first home game.
The stadium has had two previous home games in 2017 and 2016.
It will be the Cardinals third stadium to open and the team’s ninth overall.
Gurne said he was pleased the Cardinals are taking the opportunity to make a change.
“It’s not a decision that’s made lightly,” he told the St Louis Post-Dispatch.
“But I think it’s the right thing to do for the long-term.”
St. Peter’s Football coach Jeff Bohn said the changes will bring a new energy and excitement to the stadium and the city of St Peter.
The Rams are the only NFL team to play at St Peter’s Stadium, and Gurnoe said the change will allow the Cardinals to do that.
The only other NFL team that has played there was the New York Giants in 2016, and that team won their first Super Bowl in that stadium.
“The Cardinals are going to do it on a home field,” Gurnie said.
