Perth, Australia (AFP) – Westgate vacation houses are one of the world’s most expensive and luxurious hotels.
But, according to hotel owners and guests, the popular holiday resort is now under threat from new laws that could make the industry more difficult.
The laws are expected to go into effect from July 1 and have already been proposed in Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
The Federal Government has been working on the laws since last year and in March it approved the new rules in a special royal commission.
But the new laws could be a huge blow to the industry.
The new laws will make it more difficult for hotel owners to operate and expand businesses in WA, Queensland, NSW, Victoria and South Australia, with the impact likely to be greatest in Perth, according a report from the Australian Hotel & Resort Association (AUSTRAA).
“There is a lot of concern around the [existing] hotel regulations, and they have been around for some time,” said Nick Wood, a guest and owner of the Perth Westgate Resort.
“I think it’s a very bad idea.”
“The regulations have been in place for many years and they are very easy to comply with.
If there is a change, it would be a very significant blow to a lot more people who have been running hotels in Perth.”
Mr Wood has lived at the Westgate since 2013 and is a frequent visitor.
But he said he has been in negotiations with Westgate for a new hotel, which he is unable to rent due to the new regulations.
“The rules are pretty much the same,” he said.
“They are just not in place yet.
I’ve been trying to negotiate with them for about three months now, and it’s been a struggle.”‘
They just need to change the rules’The Government said the changes will not affect the operation of hotels or the accommodation and meals they provide.
But hotel owners say the changes are a major blow to what has become one of Perth’s most popular tourist attractions.
“There’s been so much bad press about the hotels, it’s just not true at all,” said Matt Ritchie, a hotel owner in the city’s south west.
“People don’t want to travel to Westgate because it’s so popular, it is not a good hotel.”
“I’m not even sure what the new law is, I’ve got two Westgate hotels and the first one is in Victoria.”
Mr Ritchie has already had to cancel several trips to Westgates due to safety concerns.
“If you’re going to come to WestGates, you need to know what the rules are,” he told ABC Perth.
“When we were in the States, we had a big fire at the hotel and there was a lot going on.”
It’s the same for me now, you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“The laws will also have a devastating impact on the industry, with many hotels now reliant on a large number of guests to stay, and a growing number of tourists.”
We don’t know how many people will come to the Westgends,” said Mr Wood.”
Hopefully the regulations change and they don’t change and it just needs to change.””
Westgate is the biggest drawcard for the people that come through.
These rules change the game, they’ll have a knock-on effect on the rest of WA and our airport, and so we are going to be facing a major financial impact on Westgate.” “
The tourism industry here is going to suffer,” said the WA Tourism Authority’s chief executive, John Taylor.
“These rules change the game, they’ll have a knock-on effect on the rest of WA and our airport, and so we are going to be facing a major financial impact on Westgate.”
Westgate Resort owner Matt Riddle said he was not prepared to see the rules passed.
“Westgates is a really, really big drawcard to people who come to Perth, and if we lose that, we are definitely going to lose a huge part of our business,” he.
“You can’t just make it up on the back of people’s dollars.”
“It just doesn’t make sense.”
